La Festa dei Fuochi

Tra la fine di Marzo e la metà di Aprile, il Sestiere Porta Manaresca partecipa insieme agli altri borghi e sestieri ad una festa popolare di origini arcaiche, ancora oggi molto in uso in varie località Abruzzesi, dove con il rito del fuoco in onore del Dio Sole, si festeggiava e sollecitava l’arrivo della bella stagione.

I cosiddetti “Riti dei Fuochi” si celebrano a partire da San Martino a Novembre, fino a San Giuseppe. La Festa dei Fuochi di Sulmona è dedicata a San Giuseppe e chiude il ciclo dei riti.

I Borghi ed i Sestieri raccolgono nei giorni precedenti grandi cataste di legno che bruceranno la sera di domenica nella piazza. Nell’ambito della festa viene proposta anche l’ Antica competizione  di “Asini a capezza” dove i Borghi si sfidano per la vittoria del Palio degli Asini, ognuno con il proprio asinello.

Si inizia da sabato sera con stand enogastronomici e giochi a cura dei Borghi e Sestieri, musica fino a tarda notte, per poi arrivare alle 19 di domenica con il Palio degli asini, guidati dai capitani e dai soci dei vari borghi e sestieri. Seguiranno i fuochi che illumineranno a giorno Piazza Maggiore. 

The fires festival

Between the end of March and mid-April, the Sestiere Porta Manaresca participates together with the other villages and sestieri in a popular festival of archaic Sunshine, they celebrated and urged the arrival of summer.

The so-called “Riti dei Fuochi” are celebrated starting from San Martino in November, up to San Giuseppe. The Sulmona Fire Festival is dedicated to St. Joseph and closes the cycle of rites.

In the preceding days the villages and districts collect large piles of wood that will burn on Sunday evening in the square. As part of the festival, the Ancient competition of “Halter donkeys” is also proposed where the villages compete for the victory of the Palio degli Asini, each with their own donkey.

It starts on Saturday evening with food and wine stands and games by the Borghi and Sestieri, music until late at night, and then arrives at 19 on Sunday with the Palio of donkeys, led by the captains and members of the various villages and districts. The fires that will illuminate Piazza Maggiore will follow.
